Sarah Louisa Kilpack was an active artist between 1839 and 1909. She was a British artist known for her dramatic portrayals of coastal landscapes. Born in London, she started as a successful concert pianist. She later shifted her focus to painting, particularly drawn to the raw power and unpredictable nature of the sea. Although recognition during her lifetime was limited, Kilpack's work is gaining renewed appreciation for its technical skill and emotional depth.
Her works often depict stormy scenes, capturing the crashing waves, rugged cliffs, and the resilience of coastal communities. In this painting we find quite the opposite. We see a peaceful harbor with a fishing boat with vibrant red and yellow sails located in the midground. There is also a steam boat in the distant horizon next to a meticulously painted lighthouse. At the top of the light house there appears to be a cross. In the foreground we see what appears to be either a buoy or a float for locating a fishing net. The simplicity of the triangular design created by the sails enhances the sense of peace and calm by grounding the image and providing direction for viewers eye to move. This is even further communicated through the use of primary colors and their inherent ability to harmonize. Although it's a small little painting it speaks volumes about Kilpack’s technical ability and the serenity one might have experienced on the coast of France during the late 1800’s.
