The Commission Process
Step by Step

I begin each new portrait commission with an initial consultation. This is the time to delve into your vision for the artwork. We’ll discuss the subject, desired style, the intended placement of the portrait, and any specific preferences or requests. This initial meeting sets the expectations and ensures that I am the right artist for the job.

If, after the initial consultation all are in agreement, I will present the client with a contract.  Once the contract is signed and down payment is made I will embark on a research journey, gathering photographs, personal anecdotes, or other materials that can help me capture the essence and personality of the subject. I may also delve into historical portraits, artistic techniques, and various styles to determine the best approach for the specific commission. They can include both photoshoots and live sitting by the subject.

Next I will begin creating preliminary sketches from my research to explore different compositions, poses, and expressions for the portrait. I will also create color studies to experiment with color palettes and lighting effects. These sketches and studies serve as a foundation for the final painting and allow me to refine my ideas before committing to the canvas.

Once all are satisfied with the sketches and color studies, I prepare the surface material. Then I will start with an underpainting, a layer of paint that establishes the value relationships and composition of the work. A variety of techniques may be used to create a foundation for the desired outcome. Once complete we will have what is essentially a grayscale version of the finished painting.

Throughout the process, I maintain open communication with the client, providing regular updates and seeking feedback on my progress.  Once the underpainting is complete and approved I will begin to add many layers of color on top, refining details, adjusting colors, and adding finishing touches.

Once I am satisfied with the painting and consider it finished I will submit it to the client for approval.  Due to the amount of preliminary work already done and approved this should not be a difficult process.  The client will then approve the finished painting.  At this point the finished painting will need a sufficient amount of time to dry.  Once it has reached a set amount of time to dry I will apply the finish varnish.  This layer will bring clarity to the overall image as well as protect the surface for many years to come.

At this point a decision will be made about how to frame the painting.  I often provide recommendations.  If the client wishes I can also provide the frame as part of the commissioned project.  Once all terms have been met and the client is completely satisfied I will deliver the finished painting.
