Alex Zemper
Oil on board, 8”x10”, 2023

This small landscape painting by Alec Zemper began as a plein air painting and was later finished in the studio. The loose brushwork and simple palette are reminiscent of late 19th century European artists associated with the naturalist movement.  Like the naturalists, Zemper started with a warm undertone and then placed cool colors on top to create an overall harmonious and balanced image.  The reds in the horizon compliment the warm and cool greens in the lily pads, cattails and trees. This painting is a great example of how less is more and exact color relationship is everything.
